The Ancient Lie

In Eden’s primal splendor, the devil lied to Eve.

By tooth and fang—a damning Lie, that she did not perceive.

The devil said, “Oh, did God say, to eat this fruit is sin?

“He knows that it’ll make you wise, and you’ll become like Him.”

Still, he lies that same old Lie. We hear it all the time.

We’ve even written stories for our kids about his crime:

When all dwarfs went off to work, the evil queen came witching.

“Snow White, my dear, a gift for you, an apple made for wishing.

“All your dreams will come to you. Let no one make you fear.

“Good things, wise, and lovely too will suddenly appear.”

When I grew up, life grew hard. My faith in God grew weak.

I looked for other options, then I heard the devil speak:

“Like God you will become, the future you will tell,

“The ghostly dead will greet you, through this necromantic spell.

“With potion, charm and magick, your will--for good or bane.

“Through sorcery and wizardry and witchery you’ll reign!”

I believed that Ancient Lie and studied twenty years.

But lines were blurred, lights were dim like a carny House of Mirrors.

Then I saw the Prince of Lies and eyed him face to face.

In his hand he clutched the fruit from Eden's sad disgrace.

I understood God barred the gate, the devil was kicked out.

He stole a piece of Eden's fruit and touts it all about.

The powers called occult, are powers obsolete--

Fragments from the Garden, that he clings to in defeat.

That system is outdated, from the fallen soul of man.

Dim memories from Eden, he exploits them when he can.

We cannot become God, the devil knows full well.

He ran that scam before, and he ended up in Hell.

Let’s not go there with him; take care the path you take.

When life is dead and done, it's eternity at stake.
